Best shirting fabric for dress shirts: 120/2, 140/3 or 200/2?

2026-09-15 · by David Milano

I've been selling shirting long enough to stop answering this question with one number. There is no universal best shirting fabric for dress shirts - there is only the right construction for the shirt you're actually trying to sell. At Gianvito Milano I keep three high-count options on the table for most buyers: 120/2, 140/3 and 200/2. They sit in the same family and behave like three completely different fabrics.

120/2 is the workhorse. Two-ply at this count gives you a clean, fine surface with enough body that a shirt holds a collar stand and doesn't go limp by lunchtime. If you're producing office shirting in volume and want something that presses fast and wears predictably, this is where I start almost every conversation. It's forgiving in cutting, forgiving in wear, and it reads expensive without asking your customer to think about it.

140/3 is what I reach for when a client says "softer and heavier, but keep it formal." Three-ply at this count gives the yarn more twist and more presence; the cloth drapes instead of floating. It's the right call for a dress shirt that has to survive a full day under a jacket and still look sharp at the evening. If your customers have told you high-count shirts feel flimsy, this is the answer.

200/2 is the top of the range. It's the finest thing I'd put into a formal dress shirt, and it needs the right maker behind it - someone who understands a light, dense cloth and doesn't fight it with heavy interlining. High count isn't a marketing word to me. It's a commitment to a customer who already knows the difference.

Behind all three, the specs stay consistent: long-staple cotton, a yarn range running from 40 up to 200, weights of 100-200 g/sqm, and a standard width of 140-150 cm. Our non-iron finish holds at DP3.5, which is genuinely wearable without turning the cloth into plastic.

Commercially we keep it simple. Minimum order is 1 metre, cut in 0.1 metre increments, and whole rolls always price better. 50 metres comes in at 95% of list, 100 metres at 90%, 300 metres at 85% - freight not included. Terms are FOB in HKD, payment before shipment. Production lead time is 2 working days, and air freight to the EU or US runs 3-5 days. If you're still deciding, ask for a sample book: they're organised by series, each volume carrying every in-stock colourway in that range, and they go out 1-2 working days after confirmation. Handling fee in principle, negotiable, free for long-standing partners. Enquiries get answered within 24 hours on working days. Hong Kong Huayuan Trading Company Limited has been doing this since 2009, alongside more than 2,500 partner tailors.

There's no shortcut to the best shirting fabric for dress shirts - but there is a fast way to feel the difference. Start with one metre. Order a sample book or a cut length at gianvitomilano.com and put the three against your own pattern table. That's the only test that counts.
