Antibacterial shirting fabric: what ISO 20743 certification really proves

2026-10-29 · by David Milano

Every couple of weeks a buyer messages me and asks whether our antibacterial shirting fabric is "certified." I always ask the same thing back: certified by whom, against which organisms, and on which sample? Those three answers are the entire conversation. ISO 20743 is a genuine test method, and it does prove something real - it just doesn't prove everything the word "antibacterial" makes people assume.

Here's the mechanics. ISO 20743 is a quantitative method for measuring antibacterial activity on textile products. A lab inoculates the fabric with a defined bacterial strain, incubates it under controlled conditions, and counts what survives compared with a control specimen. The output is a reduction value, not a rubber stamp. That sounds pedantic until you're the one signing off on a bulk order: a number tells you how the fabric performed on the piece the lab received, under the conditions written into the report.

What it doesn't tell you is just as important. It doesn't prove the finish survives repeated home laundering unless washing was built into the protocol. It doesn't cover every organism - only the strains tested. It says nothing about skin safety or irritation; that's a separate test on a separate standard. And it certainly doesn't travel automatically to the roll we ship you next season, because finish application is a process-control question on the mill floor. So ask for a report tied to the production batch you're buying, not a marketing PDF with a logo on it.

My own position, after doing this out of Hong Kong since 2009: on a dress shirt, the honest benefit is odour control through a long hot day, and it must never cost you hand-feel. A finish sprayed onto a mediocre base cloth to win a logo is worse than no finish at all. Ours sits on long-staple cotton - yarn counts from 40 to 200, weights from 100 to 200 g/sqm, standard width 140-150 cm, DP3.5 non-iron if you want the easy-care version. The cloth has to be worth wearing before the antibacterial story means anything.

Practically: we cut from 1 metre, in 0.1 metre increments, so you can build a fitting set without committing to a roll. Bulk pricing steps in at 50 m, 100 m and 300 m, HKD, FOB, payment before shipment. Stock lines ship in 2 working days and air freight lands in the EU or US in 3-5 days. Sample books are organised by series, each one carrying every in-stock colourway for that series; we confirm within 24 hours on a working day and the book goes out 1-2 working days after you approve it. More than 2,500 partner tailors work with us, which is why we send out 5,000 sample books a year - most of them to people who ask exactly the questions above before they order a single metre.

If you want to see the reports and feel the cloth in the same week, start at gianvitomilano.com and tell me which series you're pricing. I'll send the test documentation with the sample book and answer the awkward questions before you have to ask them.
